Great Valentine’s day gestures

FullSizeRender (19)Valentine’s day is here once again. To many its about chocolates, flowers and other presents. To me Valentine’s day is a day to honor you’re loved one, make the best of the time you have with them and show them how much love you have for them through gestures.

I’m a bit of a history buff and I’ve always been inspired by tales of love from different historic periods. Here are my 3 favorite tales of history’s most romantic gestures.

Edward VIII’s- Love over the throne
King Edward VIII became king in 1936 after the death of his father, George V. Edwards reign was faced with controversy due to his infatuation with a socialite named Wallis Simpson. Wallis was a young American woman, she was married and had already divorced once before. The relationship between her and Edward drove the monarchy into crisis. Edward was forced to choose between love and the crown. In the name of love King Edward VIII gave up the throne in December 1936. Edward and Wallis married in 1937, and they spent the rest of their lives together.

The Taj Mahal- A monument of Love
India’s Taj Mahal took over a decade to build, it employed thousands of workers and almost bankrupted an empire – all so a man could express his love for a woman. Mughal emperor Shah Jahan intended the Taj Mahal as a tomb for his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to the couple’s 14th child. The Taj Mahal was built primarily as a monument to her memory. Years later Shah Jahan was buried beside his beloved wife in the Taj’s white marble tomb.

Joe DiMaggio- Flowers for Marilyn
Baseball player Joe DiMaggio and actress Marilyn Monroe were only married for less than a year in 1954, but Joe remained infatuated with Marilyn for the rest of his life. Before her unfortunate death in 1962, Joe was reportedly planning to propose to Marilyn once more. Joe DiMaggio never remarried and in a famous romantic gesture, he sent red roses to her grave in Los Angeles three times a week for the next 20 years.

So my tip for Valentine’s day:
Open a bottle of wine
Make a lovely roast dinner together
Watch a movie and simply enjoy each others company.

For me Valentine’s day is all about spending time with someone I love. Nothing more is needed. Just his company.

Happy Valentine’s Day <3 H
