Kotiutuminen on aloitettu täällä Briteissä, ja ensimmäiset kodin ostoksetkin ovat jo tehtynä. Vuokraisäntämme ja kanssamme asunnon jakava Leon on auttanut meidät jaloillemme uuden elämänvaiheen kynnyksellä, ja hänen ansiostaan olemme oppineet jo ensimmäisen viikon aikana hurjan paljon uudesta kotikaupungistamme Bristolista.

Settling down has started here in the UK, and the first home shopping is already done. Leon, who is our landlord, and also shares the apartment with us, has helped us on our feet on the beginning of a new stage of life, and thanks to him we’ve learned a lot from our new hometown Bristol from the very first week.

Olemme Mariannen kanssa olleet Briteissä yhden kokonaisen viikon, ja olemme kerinneet jo treenaamaan, kävelemään lähemmäs 100 000 askelta, juttelemaan paikallisille vanhuksille ja muillekin ohikulkijoille (ovat tulleet pysäytetyiksi huonon suuntavaistomme takia) sekä käymään omalla yliopistollamme tutustumiskierroksella (opinnot alkavat virallisesti vasta huomenna).

We have been together with Marianne in the UK for a whole week, and we have already begun training, walked closer to 100,000 steps, talked to local elderly people and other passers-by (who have been stopped by us because of our bad sense of direction), and visited in the University of the West of England (the studies will officially start tomorrow).

Hurjimmalta on tuntunut puheen tuottaminen, ja välillä jopa nopeatempoisen brittiaksentilla varustetun puheen ymmärtäminen. Nämä olivat juuri ne haastavuutta tuottavat asiat, joita osasin omalla kohdalla odottaakin. On kuitenkin helpottavaa huomata, kuinka nopeasti puheen tuottaminenkin helpottuu päivä päivältä uusien tavattujen ihmiskontaktien sekä paikallisten kanssa käytyjen keskustelujen myötä. Tärkeintä on mielestäni edes yrittää tuottaa puhetta, koska yleensä paikalliset arvostavat yrittämistä paljon enemmän, kuin kieliopillisesti tai lausunnaltaan oikeaoppista ulosantia.

The most terrific experience has been the speaking in a foreign language, and even sometimes understanding the fast-paced British accent. These were just the challenges that I knew to expect in my own case. It is, however, relieving to see how fast the speaking can be improved after meeting new people and talking to them. I think it is even more important to try to produce speaking because usually, the local people appreciate the trying much more than just grammatically or verbally perfect outcome.

Mitä tulee kodinostoksiin, kävimme Mariannen kanssa parissa vähittäistavarakaupassa (Wilko ja Primark) ostamassa vaihdon ajalle välttämättömiä tavaroita. Myönnetään, että saattoi mukaan tarttua myös muutama tavara, joita ilmankin olisi tullut toimeen (mm. tuoksukynttilät ja kylpytakki). Suurimpana yllätyksenä minulle tuli, että on olemassa Primarkin kaltaisia ”halpakauppoja”, jotka myyvät tavaraa kuin roskaa ja mitä luultavammin nollakatteella. En ollut koskaan aikaisemmin astunut kyseisen liikkeen ovista sisälle, ja olihan ensireaktio tietenkin häkellyttävä halpuuden ja tavarapaljouden takia. En henkilökohtaisesti ole edellämainitsemien liikkeiden suurkuluttaja – enemmänkin päinvastoin – pyrin selviämään elämästä melko minimalistisella omaisuudella. Olin kuitenkin helpottunut, kun ei tarvinnut käyttää pientä omaisuutta kaiken välttämättömän ostamiseen, vaan rahaa jäi vielä hieman säästöönkin ostosten jälkeen.

We visited together with Marianne in a couple of retail stores (Wilko and Primark) to buy the goods needed for the exchange period. It is admitted that I might have caught up with a few of the things that I would haven’t needed (for example vanilla scented candles and a bathrobe). The biggest surprise to me was that there are ”cheap stores” like Primark, who sell goods like junk and, more likely, with a zero margin. I had never been in the shop like this before, and the first reaction, of course, was ”overwhelmed” because of the cheapness and the quantity of the goods. I’m not personally an ideal consumer of the stores like this – I’m more like the opposite – I try to survive with a pretty minimalist property. However, I was relieved when I hadn’t had to use a big amount of money to buy everything that was needed, and I still had some money left after shopping.

Iso-Britannia on muutenkin hintatasoltaan hieman kalliimpi maa, mitä Suomi on – ainakin asumiskulujensa puolesta. Ruoka oli hintansa puolesta yllätys, sillä esimerkiksi Gatwickin lentokenttä tarjosi terveellisiä ja annoskooltaan isoja salaatteja ja kasvisruokia alle viidellä eurolla. Pienissä vähittäistavarakaupoissakin elintarvikkeiden hintataso on Suomen hintoja edullisemmat. Opiskelijalle tämä yllätys oli tietenkin helpottava, sillä ylimääräisiin kuluihin ulkomailla asumisessa on varauduttava, ja tällaisiin yllättäviin kuluihin olis myös hyvä jättää rahaa käytettäväksi.

Britain is a slightly more expensive country than Finland, at least its housing costs. The price range of the food was a really nice surprise, for example, Gatwick Airport offered healthy and large-sized salads and vegetarian dishes for less than five euros. Even in small retail stores, the price range of the groceries is cheaper than in Finland. To the student, this surprise was, of course, nice, because you should be prepared for the extra costs while living abroad, and it would be a good idea to save some money to this kind of situations too.

Kaiken kaikkiaan Iso-Britannia alkaa tuntumaan jo huomattavasti enemmän kodilta sitä myöten, mitä enemmän maahan ja kulttuuriin täällä tutustuu. Ainoa jopa hieman huvittava vastoinkäyminen tapahtui, kun vuokraisäntämme neuvoi meille heti saapumispäivänämme, kuinka suihkusta saa lämmintä vettä, mutta kaikessa siinä alkutohinassa neuvot menivät enemmän tai vähemmän ohi ymmärryksen. Muutaman päivän ja jäätävän kylmän suihkun jälkeen, nöyrryimme jättämään ”strong independent woman” -ajatukset taaksemme, ja kysymään ongelmaan apua. Vuokraisäntämme Leon tietenkin näytti mielellään uudelleen, kuinka suihku toimii (asian näyttäminen vei aikaa maksimissaan 10 sekuntia), ja ongelmamme oli hetkessä ratkaistu. Johtopäätöksenä tästä: Uskalla kysyä neuvoa, jos sinulla on ongelma, etkä osaa ratkaista sitä heti. Näin jälkeenpäin tapaus on lähinnä naurattanut, ja saamme kuin saammekin kolme kuukautta kestävän vaihdon aikana myös lämpöisiä suihkuja.

All in all the UK is already starting to feel much more like home. The only funny incident happened when our landlord showed us how to use the shower properly right on the day we arrived in the UK. Because of all the hassle included the arriving day, the advice given by our landlord went more or less past the understanding. After a few days and freezing cold showers, we dared ourselves to leave behind the ”strong independent woman” ideas and asked for a help. Our landlord Leon was obviously pleased to show again how the shower works (it took about 10 seconds to show it) and our problem was solved instantly. Conclusion: Dare to ask for help if you have a problem and cannot solve it immediately by yourself. Afterward, we have mostly laughed with the case and we are able to enjoy the hot showers in our exchange period after all.

Otimme Mariannen (kavereiden kesken Marzu) kanssa itseämme niskasta kiinni, ja teimme vihdoinkin jo kauan vireillä olleet LinkedIn-profiilit. Otimme tilejä varten ammattimaisemmat ja päivitetyt kuvat, ja lisäilimme muutenkin taustatiedot itsestämme. Olemme saaneet paljon palautetta muum muassa koulutovereiltamme, että ehkä olisi jo korkea aika luoda profiilit LinkedIn:n puolelle. We pulled ourselves together with Marianne (between friends Marzu) and made LinkedIn profiles to ourselves after a long time planning to do so. We took more professional and updated images for the accounts, and we also added background information about ourselves. We have received a lot of feedback, for example, our friends from the school in Finland, that it might be the right time to create the profiles on LinkedIn.
